Rockwood
This home of Joseph Shipley, a Quaker merchant banker, was built between 1851 and 1854 in the Gothic revival style. The landscaping reflected the beauty of an English country estate.
The museum has been restored to the way it appeared in 1895, known as the Gilded Age of the Victorian Era.
The garden area of the estate came at the time when people were getting tired of the formal garden designs prevalent in the European style. Landscapers moved to the natural garden designs which they felt gave romance and pleasure to the garden area. In the case of Rockwood the entire landscape was designed in this manner.
Rockwood has been known to have Ghost Tours, so be sure to check with them to see when the next one will be. They invite you to join them for the paranormal and learn some of their favorite “close encounters” experienced by staff, guests, and visiting psychics. Cost for these adventures average $15 per person and the minimum age is 16. There are many stairs to climb so you must be able to do this without difficulty.
