The Dutch House was once a small and quaint, late 17th century artisan’s home. The museum gets its name from the Dutch settlers and traders coming in and out of New Castle’s active port. A more humble abode than the Amstel House, the Dutch House museum offers a look into the traditions and lifestyle of early America.
You will be stepping back in time to the seafaring day sof the late 17th century when New Castle was a young port. You will see the gleam of early pewter set at a hutch table. You will see the kas (an unusual cupboard), spoon rack,
1714 Bible and other Dutch Colonial artifacts which reflect the traditions and lifestyles in early America. This is one of the oldest houses in Delaware. The original house (shown in the picture) continues to exist as the structural system for the house, beneath a Federal period “skin”, or renovations that transformed the look of the house to what you see today.
While you are visiting you will learn more of the history of the house and how it was built.
The house has a beamed ceiling.
