Barratt's Chapel Museum - Frederica, Delaware
Come and visit the oldest surviving Methodist church in the United States. This is the location where the Methodists planned to become an independent church. Built in 1780 this church was known as the Independence Hall of American Methodism.
The Chapel looks on the outside very much like it did in 1784. This is when Coke and Asbury met to formulate the structure for the Methodist church in America. The Chapel has undergone several renovations. The present appearance dates from 1842.
Barratt’s Chapel is an officially designated Heritage Landmark of the United Methodist Church. There are two major services each year at the Chapel: the Anniversary Service on the second Sunday of November commemorating the meeting of Coke and Asbury, and a Christmas Carol Service on a Sunday in December. The Chapel is also used for weddings, baptisms, funerals and other special events.
