Delmar Historic Sites - Delmar, Delaware

Mason Dixon Line MarkerDelmar Historic Sites - Delmar, Delaware.  Wonder where the “real” Mason-Dixon Line is located?  It’s right here in Delmar (at least the marker is.)  The Mason-Dixon Line is a demarcation line between the four state of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia.  It was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 to resolve a border dispute between British Colonies in Colonial America.  It is symbolically used as a cultural boundary between the North and the South.  It was the dividing line separating free and slave states (established in 1768.)

The site is marked today with the historic double crownstone marker representing the middle point of the Survey, 6.5 miles west on Rte. 54 from the center of Delmar.

There is also a 19th century Highball Signal which was used to indicate the condition of the railroad track by raising and lowering a large white ball.  You can see this located next to the Delmar Caboose on Railroad and Main Street in Delmar.
